The UnSexiest Title Ever: Guided Principles to Self-Producing Your (art)work
You’ve decided to face it: You are ready to share your artwork with the public. For an amount of time, you have developed your technique, your craft, or perhaps an idea or question to explore. And now you want to connect it to people, an audience, the proverbial public. But where do you begin?
One place to start is this referential book on self-producing your (art)work. Could you seek out an agent, promoter or curator to present your work? Sure. Some artists do — some finding success rather quickly, others taking years and sometimes not even until after their death. These are not the only ways to engage with an audience though. For the lot of artists, independently, or self-, producing in one way or another will be the primary channel for connecting their work to the world.
The idea for this book developed from noticing that, in the United States of America, the supply of independent artists far outweighs the traditional presentation opportunities, the demand, if you will. One predicament the US has is as higher education merits artistic scholarship as valuable, the volume of artists coming out of these programs exponentially increases. Then, add the compound effect of platforms like Instagram and TikTok, and suddenly that pool of a supply of independent artists exponentially increases, again.
Boom. Now we this vast vortex of creators trying to figure out how to make it all work in real-time. Beyond expression, it is livelihood that is the question at-hand.
How does one sustain a life of creative expression? How does an artist not only survive, but thrive, in the 21st century?
Through stories and lessons and key takeaways, readers will find that they are not alone in their quest of creation and distribution. Each genre has certain elements that are specific to itself, however the common denominator across the board is this: the wheel already exists. There is nothing to invent. Innovate? Sure. But entirely new? No. There is support out there for you. And the journey of tuning in to that support begins right here.
For nearly two decades, Weise has worked alongside independent artists and considers herself as one. Very slowly collecting the lessons of each project and performance, she has methodically honed in on several key principles when it comes to independently producing one’s work. No matter the scale of the work or the phase of one’s career, this book provides a blueprint of question-mapping that can be applied to any genre or art form.
