Myra Vincenza Scibetta Weise

About

Myra Vincenza is a dancer, creative director and producer based in Durham, North Carolina. After more than a decade of placing her arts management career ahead of her creative practice, she has been slowly rekindling and redefining her movement and choreographic style. This has developed into a quality that is at once fluid and precise – it is constantly following the thread of breath. Her professional dance training in ballet, modern dance, Capoeira (Angola) and West African dance began in the early 2000s in Asheville, NC, with Barrie Barton and the ACPA, and continued at the American Dance Festival, University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and included time spent studying in Brazil. She received her B.A. in Dance Studies from UNC-Greensboro in 2007.

“There was never a You before your birth. There will never be a You after your death. There will only ever be a You. Be your uniqueness fully, subtly included.”

Central to the artistic work of Myra Vincenza is the pursuit of softening and connection. Our world exists in constant juxtaposition, at once extraordinarily beautiful and utterly tragic. To protect ourselves, we build figurative walls that seem to grow in thickness the more tragedy we experience. And no one is immune to tragedy. However, rather than being in a practice of hardening, the core of her work is exploring what happens when we adopt a practice of softening into the wake of raw tenderness?

Her creative work is also deeply related to her experience as an arts manager. Weise is a producer and consultant, and founded the arts production company Proxemic Media to produce and collaborate on art projects that place human experience, storytelling, and social equity at the center of its work. Whether a public art installation, short film production or live performance, each project seeks to thoughtfully engage with the subject matter as well as the community in which the work is created and presented. Through this outlet, Weise harnesses both her professional dance training as well as more than fifteen years’ experience working in arts management worldwide in dance, music and visual art. Past work includes positions and projects with the American Dance Festival, Black on Black Project, Duke University’s Theater Operations, Empower Dance Foundation, KT Collective, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, Pilobolus Inc., Renay Aumiller Dances, Shana Tucker, Semmel Concerts (Germany) and ShaLeigh Dance Works among others.
